All over the internet there are CE programs that offer pharmacy law CE’s.  Many pharmacy technicians all over the nation are required to maintain their education over the years of being certified.  Getting these continued education credits will also put you ahead of the curb in staying up to date with pharmacy law as well.

Review Your State Board of Pharmacy Website for Updates

Make sure you always check your state board of pharmacy website for the latest updates in pharmacy law.  State by state the board of pharmacy has different laws and regulations. For instances the pharmacy law in the state of California may differ from the law in the state of Texas.  Regardless, these can be found on your state board of pharmacy website very easy access.

What is Pharmacy Law

Pharmacy is a highly regulated profession. In a nutshell pharmacy law is all about the current legal logistics of pharmacy.  For example, “how long is the pharmacy able to hold a patient’s C2 medication before filling it?”  This also includes laws according to changes in technology, and healthcare personnel.

Pharmacy Law Exam Questions

Pharmacy law exam questions can be quite tough on a general level, because keep in mind, not only do pharmacy technicians have a level of pharmacy law they have to know for their scope of practice, but other pharmacy professionals such as pharmacist, pharmaceutical sales reps, etc.  also have to know pharmacy law for their scope of practice.

So of course at each level of practice there are hard, and agonizing questions that will be presented to test your level of knowledge as a professional, so it’s to be expected.

Pharmacy Tech Laws PTCB (What Pharmacy Technicians Should Know)

Now when it comes to what you need to know for the PTCB exam, it’s pretty clean cut and dry.  Literally, what you see is what you get and there is no way around the right answer when you take the actual exam.  So it’s important to make sure that while you study for your exam you are studying direct and accurate information.

Make sure that the information is up to date.  You may wonder “how can I ensure that”?

Go to a trusted tried and true source that can show you the way.  Use trusted tried and true study materials.

You study materials for PTCB or ExCPT pharmacy law should consist of federal rules, laws, and guidelines.  Make sure you don’t confuse state laws with federal because these are two totally different things. Federal laws apply to all states nationwide, and state laws are ‘more personal’ to the state.

Pharmacy Technician Law Practice Questions

Here are some examples of questions you may encounter:

HIPPA was enacted in:

  1. 2000
  2. 2002
  3. 2003
  4. 2007

Patient identifiable information includes all of the following except:

  1. Name
  2. Patient ID number
  3. Address
  4. Email Address

List of Pharmacy Laws (In Case You Didn’t Know)

Did you know that chain pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens make up 70% of the pharmacy market today, there is a law that chain pharmacies are not allowed to operate in the state of North Dakota.  Now you see why it’s important to know the laws of your state?

Here are some more crazy pharmacy laws that you probably didn’t know about:

  • In some states pharmacist are not allowed to substitute any drug, medicine, or pharmaceutical preparation without the authority of the prescriber or purchaser.
  • In some states a non controlled prescription cannot be filled after 1 year from the date it was given.  While other states will go as long as 2 years.
  • In some states the amount of pharmacy technicians that are able to work under a pharmacist at one time varies.  Some states mandate that the amount cannot go above 2 or 3 at a time, which others will go as high as 6 technicians working under one pharmacist at a time.  (this may explain why some technicians complain about being “understaffed”).
